Summary:
This present work is a representative comparative study of profit- and non-profit-organizations/institutions in six segments of industry: administration, traffic, commerce, education, and the health and social sectors in German-speaking Switzerland.
Questions brought up by decision-makers regarding supervision/coaching, the criteria for preliminary selection, the final selection, the terms of employment, the evaluation and the acquisition of supervision and coaching, form the basis for this research while including the major social-psychological theories on the topic of supervision/coaching.
Those who use supervision/coaching tend to be more positive about supervision/coaching than those who have little or no experience with it.
Personal contact seems to play a major role in the selection of a supervisor/coach. The selection of a supervisor/coach is primarily a combined task involving the decision-makers and the people to be supervised and coached. Preferred criteria for the selection include the leadership experience and the age of the supervisor/coach.
The type of demand for supervision/coaching differs very little between institutions and organizations.
Urban and rural businesses use supervision/coaching fairly equally. Both also judge supervision/coaching to be equally important.
The remuneration for supervision/coaching varies widely depending on the industry segment and is based primarily on the need for the supervisor/coach and the customary fees for that branch.
Based on participant reports, supervision/coaching should have a very positive influence on communication, the working atmosphere, the formation and creation of efficient work processes and employee cooperation.
With respect to a willingness to take part in the study, marked differences appear between the different industry segments which use supervision/coaching.
Operational instruments for the evaluation of supervision and coaching processes should be further developed and refined. Furthermore, the reasons for refusing to participate in studies or to have any contact with supervision and coaching at all on the one hand, ways of increasing motivation for and improving participation into research on supervision and coaching by potential candidates on the other hand, should be thoroughly examined. Appropriate research projects are urgently needed.

Key words: Supervision, coaching, efficiency, acceptance, quality management
