Summary: The „Other“- the stranger and the self. Considerations concerning psychotherapy on the occasion of the death of Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995)
On the ground of E. Levinas‘ radical philosophy of the „Other“ and his interpersonal ethics the statement is made: The traditional schools of psychotherapy have not solved the problem of interpersonal relations or even approached a solution. The transference/counter transference-model of psychoanalysis and even more so the contact-model of Gestalt therapy are with respect to Levinas very “simplicistic” concepts. The death of this philosopher who can be considered as the greatest thinker concerning the theme of relatedness is taken as an occasion to delineate some of the basic ideas of Levinas, to develop concepts for the therapeutic context and to place beside the coexistence-principle of G. Marcel, so important for Integrative Therapy, the fact of the ultimate otherness (alterity-principle) and Strangeness of the Other (difference-principle) which has to be fundamentally acknowledged and respected in order to assure „mutual integrity“. This is a basic position of Integrative Therapie’s clinical philosophy.

Keywords: Clinical Philosophy, Intersubjectivity, Therapeutic Alliance, Alterity, Integrative Therapy.
