Summary: Approaching an integrative understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment approaches for patients with borderline personality disorder
The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is presented according to ICD-11 and DSM-5 criteria. The pathogenesis and standard etiological theories as well as relevant etiological theories in integrative theory regarding BPD are then discussed. Emphasis is placed on Bowlby’s attachment theory and its effects on and significance for later typical interaction patterns in patients with BPD. Based on etiological considerations, relevant therapeutic focuses are established within the framework of integrative treatment of patients with BPD.
