Summary: At the Intersection of Self-Determination and External Determination: Personality Development of Male Protection-Seeking Adolescents in Social Pedagogical Contexts from the Perspective of Integrative Identity Theory
This paper uses Hilarion G. Petzold’s Integrative Identity Theory as a theoretical framework to offer a more nuanced understanding of the personality development of male protection-seeking adolescents in social pedagogical contexts. It focuses on how identity development can be understood under the conditions of adolescence, migration, and institutional forms of external determination. The paper shows how Petzold’s theory shifts the social pedagogical perspective away from functional integration and institutional expectations of autonomy, where young people are often viewed as objects of institutional demands, toward a subject-oriented perspective that emphasizes development, embodiment, relationships, and sovereignty. In doing so, it opens new perspectives for shaping social pedagogical practice within contemporary societal and institutional realities.

Keywords: Life-Span Developmental Approach to Identity Development, male protection-seeking adolescents, self-determination and external determination, adolescence and migration, Integrative Identity Theory of Petzold and social pedagogical practice
