Summary: Basic positions and patterns „of intimate communication and interaction” – “Intuitive parenting” and “sensitive caregiving” from the newly born across the life span
This chapter from 1994 is one of the most important texts that I have written, grounded in research and practical clinical interventions, the importance of which are still valid and are today even more convincing. But as it happens from time to time it is a text which has been only poorly received and understood by psychotherapists, for it is using highly innovative theoretical approaches (Gibson, Kelso, Turvey etc.). This text marks the beginning of a neuroscientific turn in psychotherapy many years before Grawe (2004). But practitioners of psychotherapy have a lousy tendency to be attracted to simple models – Grawe (1992) was already complaining about it. But human beings are not simple! This text is highly relevant today for the treatment of BPD patients and other severe disorders. It demonstrates with fine grained analysis of Caregiver Infant Interaction, that patterns discovered by Papoušek in intuitive parenting from the first year of life and patterns of sensitive caregiving highlightened by me for the second year and later infancy are very useful indeed for clinical interventions in body oriented psychotherapy with adults (Leibtherapie). The findings are offering a basis for a „Theory of Mind“ and a „Theory of my Mind“ – an absolutly important differentiation developed by us in later studies (2012e). This text is laying the ground for our merging of the concept of Interiorisation from Vygotsky with Ferenczi’s idea of reparenting as we developed it in the “third wave” of Integrative Therapy (Sieper 2000; Petzold 2002j). Therefore this chapter is here presented anew.
