Summary
: Communication with traumatized patients – dealing in physiotherapeutic practice
In physiotherapeutic practice many patients are traumatized, often we will not know it and they will not tell us. Nevertheless, this has an impact on the communication between patient and physiotherapist and thus on the treatment outcome. For example, if a patient has had a traumatic experience with cold, this may result in a neuro-physiological re-experiencing for him with a corresponding fear of death in the here and now during an application of Kyrotherapy, without him being able to communicate this to the physiotherapist. The patient is then suddenly frozen or clearly shows symptoms of stress. Not in every case is the experience recognizable to the physical therapist and he may only notice that something is wrong when the patient suddenly stays away. What is understood by trauma, the development of trauma therapy and what consequences this can have for the communication between patient and physical therapist is explained below.

Keywords: traumatized patients, communication, physiotherapy, neuro-physiological re-experiencing, consequences.
