Summary: The Therapeutic Potency of Laughter. Mikhail Bakhtin’s Gay Philosophy of Language and its Connections to Integrative Therapy
The Russian philosopher and literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) – one of the reference authors of Integrative Therapy – is presented in this article on the basis of some of his key concepts. To begin with, dialogicity and polyphony (cf. polylogues within IT) are introduced, principles Bakhtin analysed within Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novels, as well as the chronotope which he understood as literary and also real „spacetime“ (cf. context/continuum). Special emphasis is put on the carnivalesque and the popular culture of laughter, highlighted by Bakhtin within the novels of Renaissance author François Rabelais and, for its emancipatory and world-affirming value, transferred from the literary field into a modern theory and practice of language. Bakhtin should therefore be understood more as a philosopher (of language) than as a literary theorist, offering expectionally stimulating and lucid insights to all disciplines that work with language (especially therapy and counselling, of course), many of which have already found their way into the theory of Integrative Therapy.

Keywords: dialogicity, polyphony, chronotope, carnival, culture of laughter
