Summary: NatureArts and ForestArt Therapy – experiencing and molding nature in a healing manner (
Ilse Orth, Hilarion G. Petzold 2021)
The article presents the methods of nature therapy and ForestArt therapy developed in integrative therapy by Petzold, Orth and Sieper since the end of the 1960s (Petzold, Petzold-Heinz, Sieper 1972), which was a pioneering work at the time. They enable a healing experience of nature through multi-sensory and natural aesthetic experiences, co-creative design in natural contexts (forest, field, meadows, heath, floodplain) with poetry, painting, collages with natural materials) in order to overcome phenomena of alienation, to compensate civilization diseases, stress and excessive demands and burn-out. As methods complementary to psychotherapeutic treatments that introduce non-verbal and actional moments, they can make important contributions to the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders and eco-psychosomatic complaints. In modern multimodal therapy concepts that work with personalized “bundles of therapeutic measures” (Petzold 2014i), they will become increasingly important. In our times of ecological threats and destruction, they also raise awareness of the vulnerability of nature and promote an ecophilic and ecosophical lifestyle.
